Im Themightyquinn eyes milestone

January 17, 2013 16:57:39 UK

Inter Dominion Champion Im Themightyquinn is set to become the most prolific major race winner in WA by scoring a $250,000 Yes Loans Fremantle Cup (2936m) triumph at Gloucester Park tonight.

The $3.6 million stake-earner appears to have a fourth Fremantle Cup at his mercy following a brilliant victory in last Friday's $400,000 SEW Eurodrive WA Pacing Cup (2536m).

In beating Crombie by 4m, Im Themightyquinn registered his third WA Pacing Cup triumph.

He will be long odds-on to draw clear of harness racing legend Village Kid on the winning list in Perth's main two races.

Village Kid won four WA Pacing Cups and two Fremantle Cups in the 1980s.

Earlier champion Pure Steel won four WA Pacing Cups and one Fremantle Cup.

Trainer Gary Hall Sr said Im Themightyquinn had thrived this week.

"We've given him sharper training than he had in days leading up to the WA Pacing Cup," Hall Sr said.

"He could accelerate even faster in the Fremantle Cup. I felt he took a while to fully wind up last Friday."

Hall's reinsman son Gary Jr said he did not expect problems with Im Themightyquinn's inside draw on the back line, which is usually considered a treacherous barrier.

"We won't trail the pole marker and risk being trapped on the pegs," Hall Jr said. "I'll drop Quinnie back to last at the start and we'll be ready to join the three-wide line at the right time.

"He's proved that he can come from last in this type of field."

Hall Jr said he knew in minutes before the WA Pacing Cup that Im Themightyquinn was poised to bounce back from defeats at his previous two starts.

"His characteristics in the warm-up laps indicated he was set to win again," the reinsman said. "Quinnie was shaking his head and keen to go quicker, which are excellent signs."

The Halls teamed to win two Fremantle Cups with The Falcon Strike (2002-04).

Livingontheinterest and Hokonui Ben will also run for Hall Sr in tomorrow night's cup.

"Hokonui Ben was super impressive in winning last Friday's Nights Of Thunder Final," Hall Jr said. "He's a definite danger to Quinnie."
